Aimed at the Oberver, Not the Theoretical Aspects

This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in astronomy or astrophysics. It is well suited for use as a university text, probably for a one year course. It also includes enough matherial to be useful to research scientists who may have specialized in other areas. The orientation of the book is more to the observer and analyzer of steller atmospheres rather than the theoretical approach.

In my opinion the student should have enough of a background in astronomy to at least understand the concept of spectrum lines. And math through Fourier transforms -- Chapter two of this book covers Fourier transforms, but twenty-five pages isn't quite enough to provide the understanding that I believe is needed for the rest of the book, or indeed for the questions that end Chapter 2.

This is the third edition of the book. It is updated to include the recent discoveries in both observations and the analytical tools that have been developed. To a lessor extent, some areas of the book have been revised to follow suggestions made by users of the previous editions.

Son loves it!

If you have a Thomas fan, this is a great coloring book. A lot of the Thomas books we have had, have games and other "activities" but this is the one book my son loves because all he wants to do is color in the pictures. If you want a GREAT coloring book with fun pictures, this is the one.

Cool looking stickers, buy why did I buy my son 1000 stickers. They are all over my house. My son loves these guys. My son had to pick Gordon out of every page and put them all over my carpet. They have a lot of different sizes and shaped stickers. He loves the gigantic ones.

The black ink from the coloring stained all over the table. Rather disappointed. The drawings also look little different from the original Thomas characters, but my kids still enjoy the book.

About the Author
GLENN PEMBERTON teaches Old Testament at Abilene Christian University, including a popular undergraduate course on Israel's wisdom and devotional literature. Glenn has been a preacher among churches for over twenty years. He earned his PhD from the University of Denver and the Iliff School of Theology, and has published various essays on Proverbs and is author of "Hurting with God" (ACU Press, 2012) and "When God Calls: Will You Trust Me Now?" Glenn and his wife Dana live in Abilene, Texas.

Great Resource

This book is written for undergrad college courses, but it's also a great resource for teachers in the church. It's especially helpful for teachers who are leading class members who may not have a Christian background or who do not yet have a firm grasp on the Old Testament. As is Pemberton's style, the book is very readable and clearly communicates deeper meanings and great insights behind sections or passages we may not have had a full grasp on before. Pemberton uses good humor and fresh images to help us understand the meaning of old texts.

The Dig Deeper prompts at the end of each section are great. Pemberton has unique suggestions for many fields/majors (early childhood education, political science, business students, etc.) that could apply to people in church classes as well.

I was fortunate to use this book in its manuscript form as a "test run" for class; it was a great success. The book does a fine job of stringing together the key stories and concepts of the Old Testament while avoiding excess detail. A perfect text for anyone wanting to grasp the metamessage of the Old Testament.
