Charlotte Benton is an independent architecture and design historian. Tim Benton is professor of art history at the Open University in the U.K. Ghislaine Wood was curator of the V&A touring exhibition Art Deco 1910–1939 and deputy curator of Art Nouveau 1890–1914.

Can't afford true Art Deco - this book will work instead

What a hefty and intense book - bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who is really into Art Deco. We found this amazing antique store a few years back and I was so impressed with the artistry of this period. Unfortunately I'll never be able to afford the actual antiques from this store, so this book will hopefully be appreciated nonetheless. Huge book with extensive documentation of this fabulous time period!

Thorough and Excellently Written.

This is one of the best, if not the best compilations of the Art Deco Style. From it's initial beginnings in France to it's global influence spanning decades, this compilation of articles provides an extremely thorough education into the beginnings, development, and legacy of the period.
The book is set up with five section: Introduction, Sources and Iconography, The Paris 1925 Exhibition, The Spread of Deco, and the Deco World. Within each section are in-depth articles written by multiple experts within each branch of the Art Deco spectrum. Arranged by subject as well as chronologically, each article traces the development of the Art Deco style while concentrating on a particular subject such as architecture, glass, fashion, jewelry, etc.
I appreciate the thoroughness of each and it speaks highly of the editors that the articles reference one another, often cross referencing critical images and themes. As with any discussion of a design language, images are critical in establishing a reference point on how the style developed and evolved. This book is profusely illustrated with excellent examples of created works and sketches. However, my only criticism would be that a small amount of important works mentioned are not illustrated. Perhaps the logistics of which would have been an even thicker tome, but maybe it's best left to an updated publication or to the reader to further their own research leading to an even more fruitful understanding of the style.
There are, of course, more thorough books on particular elements, but overall, this publication is essential if you want to understand in-depth the background, influences, created works, and lasting legacy of the Art Deco and it's contribution to the design dialog of the 20th century.

A nice big book about art deco.

Bought based solely on intuition, as I could not look inside the book before purchasing a copy - but with a big book about Art Deco, featuring an automobile hood ornament on the cover, I would have definitely liked to have seen more of them inside. A devoted chapter on the subject would have been perfect, but no such luck. Nothing, really (or very little) regarding deco hood ornaments on groovy old motor-cars.
Oh, well...
I've only had an opportunity to peruse the pages of this massive book, all the way through, one time. But it seemed full of stunning additions, invention, and developments wrapped in the theme of the period - art deco.
Some beautiful stuff in this book. I look forward to learning more about these astonishingly prevalent trends of design.
Would make a great gift or purchase by and for anyone interested in this subject.
