My First Guide Since Gold and Silver!

This is the first strategy guide I purchased since Pokemon Gold and Silver (not HeartGold and SoulSilver) and I am really happy with it but also slightly disappointed.

As with the games, Nintendo and Gamefreak change features constantly it seems in their walkthrough strategy guides as well. Like I said this is my first guide in a very long time, but when old guide used to tell me what Pokemon every single trainer had on every single path that I would encounter. That's not so with this guide, they only tell you how many Pokemon the trainer is holding. It's still a great guide but that disappointed me.

The rest of the book though is absolutely fantastic. The binding, the colors, the quality, everything is great. The guide itself doesn't start for maybe 50 or 100 pages in, but the intro and information in the beginning of the book is also just perfect. Some of the pages in my opinion seem to be out of ordered strangely. The page numbers are correct but the order of events gets a little strange at some points. For example they'll tell you to board the Team Plasma ship, but not tell you how to get onto the ship until after you read the whole walkthrough on how to defeat the ship. It's hard to explain but if you go through the book it makes sense. This little issue just leads to skipping ahead and then back a few pages.

There's also a lot of information in this book that I would have never known about had I not purchased it. I've been playing Pokemon since I was 4 when Red and Blue came out and there is nothing better than the franchise. I read all the websites and look for all the information but still this book has succeeded in blowing my mind in finding out new information about Pokemon and this game in general that I had not known. All and all, for the price there is no reason to not purchase this. For any true Pokemon fan this is the perfect guide.

This book is a revelation!

I was skeptical at the title but this book in no way condones homosexuality. It does reveal a biblical truth in Matthew 19 that I haven't ever really considered nor heard preached on. This book will open your eyes to a truth that is relevant and absolutely helpful to those struggling with same sex attraction and those that might reach out.

This is the answer you've been looking for!

I can't tell you how powerful this book is! In a time when so many are struggling to make sense of same-sex attraction and how that fits in with the Bible and the Christian faith, this book hits the nail on the head! I have been in church my entire life and have never heard such a clear, biblical answer as to why this struggle occurs even among many who claim to be true Christians.

"Born That Way After All" gives a biblical answer that finally makes sense! They ARE born that way, just not the way the world wants us to think. This book is perfect for that friend, or family member you know who struggles with this. There is hope, and this book has the answer you've been searching for.

I have seen first hand the lives of several people who have been set free because of the simple, biblical truths taught in this book. That is why I purchased several hard copies of the book to give away to others who are struggling with this. I couldn't recommend this book enough.

Can't afford true Art Deco - this book will work instead

What a hefty and intense book - bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who is really into Art Deco. We found this amazing antique store a few years back and I was so impressed with the artistry of this period. Unfortunately I'll never be able to afford the actual antiques from this store, so this book will hopefully be appreciated nonetheless. Huge book with extensive documentation of this fabulous time period!

Thorough and Excellently Written.

This is one of the best, if not the best compilations of the Art Deco Style. From it's initial beginnings in France to it's global influence spanning decades, this compilation of articles provides an extremely thorough education into the beginnings, development, and legacy of the period.

The book is set up with five section: Introduction, Sources and Iconography, The Paris 1925 Exhibition, The Spread of Deco, and the Deco World. Within each section are in-depth articles written by multiple experts within each branch of the Art Deco spectrum. Arranged by subject as well as chronologically, each article traces the development of the Art Deco style while concentrating on a particular subject such as architecture, glass, fashion, jewelry, etc.

I appreciate the thoroughness of each and it speaks highly of the editors that the articles reference one another, often cross referencing critical images and themes. As with any discussion of a design language, images are critical in establishing a reference point on how the style developed and evolved. This book is profusely illustrated with excellent examples of created works and sketches. However, my only criticism would be that a small amount of important works mentioned are not illustrated. Perhaps the logistics of which would have been an even thicker tome, but maybe it's best left to an updated publication or to the reader to further their own research leading to an even more fruitful understanding of the style.

There are, of course, more thorough books on particular elements, but overall, this publication is essential if you want to understand in-depth the background, influences, created works, and lasting legacy of the Art Deco and it's contribution to the design dialog of the 20th century.

A nice big book about art deco.

Bought based solely on intuition, as I could not look inside the book before purchasing a copy - but with a big book about Art Deco, featuring an automobile hood ornament on the cover, I would have definitely liked to have seen more of them inside. A devoted chapter on the subject would have been perfect, but no such luck. Nothing, really (or very little) regarding deco hood ornaments on groovy old motor-cars.
Oh, well...
I've only had an opportunity to peruse the pages of this massive book, all the way through, one time. But it seemed full of stunning additions, invention, and developments wrapped in the theme of the period - art deco.
Some beautiful stuff in this book. I look forward to learning more about these astonishingly prevalent trends of design.
Would make a great gift or purchase by and for anyone interested in this subject.

Comfort reading

I needed this, after 3 years of wondering if my husband was ok, I am not reassured he is fine and keeping an eye on things in death as he did in life. I have purchased this for a friend who tragically lost a son, he is finding comfort in it and that is what I was hoping for.

Born in California at the end of World War II, John lived there until his father was transferred to Japan where he graduated from high school. He graduated from Nile C. Kinnick (YO-HI) where he excelled in track and field. He served with the US Army Special Forces for 13 years, then joined the US Department of State and served another 14 years. He has traveled to over 100 countries. He is a graduate of George Mason University with a BS Degree in Education and has a Master s Degree from the University of Leicester, UK. John is married to Joyce and they have 5 children. He and his wife are now retired and living in northern Florida.

Gillgren continues to bring excellent children’s fiction as he combines elements of history, romance, and adventure into a new type of treasure hunt. His second book "The Treasure of Ching Shih" in "The Adventures of the Cali Family series induces new waves of excitement and mystery.

The Cali Family can’t resist the opportunity to go diving in Honolulu, Hawaii for another treasure hunt experience. After all, who could resist diving for stolen loot left behind by the notorious, female Chinese pirate Ching Shih?

The reader sails into the year 1844 as Gillgren describes that dark, ruthless nature of Ching Shih. While female pirates existed throughout history, she proved herself unstoppable as she took command of her deceased husband’s 1,800 ships and led over 80,000 men. Her thieving knew no bounds as she robbed jewels and opium. However, before the treasure could safely transition to Hawaii, a natural disaster seized the land, and the treasure was lost at sea.

Fast forwarding hundreds of years later, Mr. Chang visits the Cali family in California to ask for their help in finding Ching Shih’s missing treasure. Their treasure hunt journey is anything but easy. The Cali family deals with villains that have the ruthlessness of Ching Shih herself, and no characters are who they appear to be. In spite of the chaos, the family proves that courage can overcome obstacles, and that hardships can’t break the bonds of friendship and love.

Gillgren continues to excel as he blends the realms of history and fiction. Ching Shih’s backstory is carefully woven into the plot, and has a huge impact on the story’s happenings.

What sets this action adventure book apart is its brilliant characters. Carmine continues to be a protective, strong father for his family, and ends up being a great inspiration to his son, Snail, whose bravery allows him to escape when his family is kidnapped. Carmine also doesn’t hesitate to show love to his wife or children, which also inspires Snail to grow a soft heart for Teri, a beautiful Chinese girl connected to the dastardly events of the novel. Mr. Chang also makes a fantastic villain, but the reader can still laugh when Carmine insults him.

Gillgren offers a fun, suspenseful, yet heartfelt read that will engage children and adults in the intriguing wonders of treasure hunting and sea exploration. Highly recommended for readers of any age who enjoy high sea adventures and a fun read. This is the second book in John Gillgren’s "The Adventure of the Cali Family series". I agree, too advanced for small children

I am a dance teacher with several years experience. I bought this book/CD combination because I'm always looking for new ideas to enhance my classes for younger children (which can get repetitive). While many of Borross's ideas are interesting, and can be adapted, I found that the tempos of the music and time allotted for each exercise was completely out-of-whack with what is possible for 3-4 year olds.

For example, the Spider port de bras. The beginning, swaying arms is far too slow, but then the tempo speeds up to a ridiculously fast speed to rush through the basic arm movement. My children couldn't follow along! The butterfly song to stretch was two minutes of just the butterfly stretch. If the author teaches children of this age and can get them to follow along and *enjoy* these exercises (rather than frustrating them), then I'm impressed. Most of the exercises that I tried in my classes did not engage the students. Some of them (a ponche? with 3 year old's? really? An attitude? Good grief, you can't get their legs straight at this age!) are completely inappropriate for this age group.

That said, the exercises can be adapted and used with older ages. Some can still be used with younger children, however, not enough of them to justify the expense of this book. If you're an experienced dance teacher I wouldn't expect this to give you a lot of new material, if you're a beginning teacher and you try to use this in a classroom expect tears and frustration (both yours and the students).

A solid manual, recommended for any instructor

Ballet can prove to be a great way to get exercise and learn coordination at any age, especially as young children. "Ballet Beginnings for Children: Pre-School Movement Fundamentals for Ages 3 and 4" is a guide for both parents and ballet instructors who deal with children. Formed from a master with many years of experience, Rosemary Boross imparts her wisdom onto readers and lays forth many proven teaching strategy. Enhanced with two CDs with music geared toward the age group doing ballet dancing, "Ballet Beginnings for Children" is a solid manual, recommended for any instructor.

Great Resource! - some exercises can be modified

I have been using this book for a little over a year in my pre-ballet classes and I have found it quite helpful for planning classes, building coordination, strength, and flexibility, and for introducing young children to the concepts of ballet. One of my classes comprises 4- and 5-year-olds (some were 3 when the class began), and the other class has kindergarten and first-graders, but I have found that the material is just as useful in the older group, perhaps more so, since they grasp the material more quickly. Personally I think it's a little weird to have a man's voice singing about flowers and bunnies in classes that consist of girls only (at least for me), but the girls love the music and I let them sing along as they do the exercises.

The book is very thorough in introducing teaching methods for young children, the components of a pre-ballet class, common mistakes to watch out for, step progressions, and creative ideas to make the classes more fun and interesting. The book is intended to be a complete curriculum and can be used as such. I do not use all of the material or use it exclusively, but it would be easy to do so.

I gave the book four stars instead of five for three reasons. First, some of the exercises as given are a little beyond a 3- or 4-year-old's ability in terms of tempo and combinations of steps. I have modified a few of the exercises (moreso the centre floor exercises than the warm-up) to make them more appropriate for my students. I also have not been able to introduce all the exercises given in a single year for a class that meets once a week for 45 minutes or an hour.

Secondly, many or even most of the centre and allegro exercises are just too fast, regardless of age group. My firm belief is that movements should be learned and mastered at a slow tempo before they are done fast, and the exercises as written in this book often give absurdly fast timing, which in my experience, inevitably leads to the children just plain running or falling down and hurting themselves. So I do some of the steps at half-tempo where that is the case.

The third reason for the 4-star rating is terminology. A few of the songs use terms that I do not use in my classes, such as coup� and pass� which, although used commonly in the US, are misnomers for sur le cou-de-pied and retir�, and I am particular about using the proper terms in my classes, so I just don't use one or two of the songs. I also don't use the port de bras music because it gives first through fifth positions of the arms (which can apply to either the Cecchetti or French school), and I teach the Vaganova method which only has three arm positions; another studio where I teach pre-ballet uses the French terms for the arms (en bas, en avant, en haut, etc.) so I don't use the song for that class either, but someone who uses the French or Italian port de bras won't have that issue.

Overall I think this is a really useful book, especially for beginning teachers or teachers with little experience teaching young children, because you can follow the material to the letter and have a whole year's curriculum laid out, or you can just pick and choose exercises and use the book and CDs as inspiration for your own ideas. Either way I recommend it.

A Great Book for the Times We're In

There's a high frequency of loving awareness coming through this book.

I finished reading it yesterday afternoon and my inner tuning forks were set a vibratin'. I had been noticing a particularly stringent round of discouragement and depression playing out in my mental/emotional field in the past few days. So this morning, I sat with the book again and the guidance on pages 139-153 really came home in a way that was visceral and effective.

The author expresses universal principles that I have been using from Buddhism and Advaita for years - in a way that synergizes the teachings of both, simply, clearly and practically.

The consciousness practices are accessible, loving, kind, simple, humble, doable.

May "The Sovereignty of Love" be of benefit to many and All, far and wide.

Contemporary Projects for Needlepoint & Cross Stitch

It’s a rare modern cross stitch book that can make the transition to needlepoint as easily and beautifully as Big Cross Stitch does. In fact, if you saw the cover picture without the title you’d probably think it was needlepoint.

That’s because much modern cross stitch uses several things that don’t translate to needlepoint very well, namely: lots of colors, outlining, and partial stitches. In this book we find bold designs without the detail of outlining, relatively few colors, and whole stitches.

Besides these things, the designs completely cover the ground, unlike most cross stitch and they are stitched in a familiar material– tapestry wool.

Look inside and you’ll find that the designs are all stitched on 7-count needlepoint canvas (rug or quickpoint canvas), using a strand of tapestry wool, with only a few using cross stitch fabrics. It’s a larger ground, and more contemporary designs, but this is the same stitch and yarn used in Elizabeth Bradley kits.

In fact, in her introduction, Pearce says that these designs can all be done as needlepoint. She explains that her big cross stitch technique is a hybrid of needlepoint and cross stitch.

There are 30 projects in all ranging from a small change purse to a Christmas tree skirt. Each project is introduced with a full-page picture plus a smaller detail picture. A box called ‘stitch stats’ has the stitch count, thread, ground (called base), and skill level. The skill levels are consistent throughout the book an are defined in the first section. The first page for each project also has a material list (with amounts) and the method to complete stitching the project.

Following this you will find a full-color chart, color key, and finishing instructions. Also on these pages are some ideas for variations in making the project.

My only problem with the book is that many of the charts cover two pages. Often this can cause problems, but these charts are large and the book opens enough, so that no part is lost in the binding.

The final chapter, Stitching School, covers the basics from thread coverage to basic stitching techniques. There is also a color conversion charts that uses both symbols and names and lists colors in Appleton, DMC floss, and Anchor floss. It ends with finishing instructions for a variety of items.

I love the designs in this book. They are bright without looking childish, modern but modern that is a twist on the traditional. It’s a great resource for easy-to-complete projects that deserves a spot on your shelf.
