Delightful Read
By LAS Reviewer
Life is precious. Cancer victim Emily Mayfield, knowing she has precious little of it left, visits her much-loved England to do her last concert then visits old estates. She collapses while touring the estate once owned by Viscount Westmore. She wakes up in a different body, in a different time, and with a husband and daughter.
Doorway to His Heart, a story of reincarnation with a twist, becomes a "second-chance" story of two troubled individuals that approach each other with extreme caution.
Emily, now in the body of the cruel, unfaithful Millicent that had flaunted her affairs and kinky sex life to humiliate her husband, is frantic until Michelle, the six-year-old daughter whom Millicent disliked appears. This delightful child becomes Emily's confidant and champion.
Emily decides to embrace the life she's given--a life that is cancer free. However, overcoming Millicent's past is a challenge. Emily is afraid if she tells anyone what happened to her she will be put in Bedlam, so she tells Michelle she cannot remember things that happened before her sickness. Michelle, thrilled to have her mother's attention, supplies information. Emily also finds Millicent's journal that helps her understand the dynamics in the household and the viscount's attitude.
Barnaby, the Viscount Westmore, avoids his wife having learned the hard way that she loves to humiliate him in front of her friends and in public. He is a gorgeous man that women are attracted to but he refuses to be unfaithful to his depraved wife who is openly unfaithful to him.
Barnaby is suspicious of the changes in his wife when she comes out of a coma--she's nice. He is sure she is setting him up for a bad experience. He watches for the old Millicent's personality to re-emerge. In spite of himself, he is drawn to his beautiful wife that is a joy to be with. Her intelligence, humor, common sense, and concern for others amazes him. Love wiggles its way in and settles down to stay.
Jo Barrett writes with a delightful, subtle humor. She lures that reader into a web of uncertainty, confusion, and a love that seems pre-ordained.
Doorway to His Heart kept me wide-awake until late -- just had to finish to see how a twenty-first century single, career woman copes with life in a distant past where she has a husband, daughter, and a disgusting past. And, oh, yes, I loved the love scenes. A good book I thorougly enjoyed.

One of my favorites since I got my Kindle

This is such a wonderful story! I knew I was in for a good one when Ms. Barrett had me nearly crying at practically the beginning when Emily (the protagonist), dying from cancer and after having collapsed in front of her friend, whispers such a sweet goodbye. Emily had me rooting for her from the start.
When Emily "wakes up" in the body and life of another woman--Millicent--who lived over 100 years previously, the story really takes off. Emily's adjustment to life in the past, complete with a husband and child, is believably told without unnecessary misunderstandings and contrived drama. Since Millicent was not a very nice person, and pretty much had the whole household including her husband and child living in fear of her, Emily's caring, funny, and sweet personality causes quite a stir. Noone is quite sure what has happened to the "old" Millicent, and while everyone is cautiously starting to like the "new" Millicent aka Emily, the real challenge is Emily's convincing her husband, Barnaby, into accepting her and eventually falling in love with her. Having been burned one too many times with the old Millicent's antics, Barnaby is understandably suspicious of the new Millicent's personality change. How Emily slowly works her way into his heart is a large part of this novel's appeal. The loveless life that Barnaby was living before Emily made her appearance was heart-wrenching to read about, but really made me want to see them get together so that they could both experience love. Barnaby's one bright spot was his and Millicent's delightful daughter, Michelle. She is the first one to befriend Emily, and wants so much for her parents to be together. With Michelle's help, Emily slowly but surely starts to win everyone over.
Emily's love of life, kindness, and her journey in embracing a second chance at living really warmed my heart and had me cheering her on. Her growing relationships with Michelle and Barnaby, as well as the household staff and her husband's best friend, are illustrated honestly and beautifully. The love scenes are tastefully done, non-jarring, and fit into the story naturally. Ms. Barrett's writing ability really shines--so much so, that I have reread this book twice already. It's a great romance to read when you need a pick-me-up, or when you just want to celebrate the joy of life.
Highly recommended!

4 1/2 Hearts from TRS!
By Tina Pavlik
Ms. Jo Barrett has written an incredibly interesting book which told a tale that was hard to believe. It was so poignant that it ripped my heart out at times. The characters she wrote were developed so well it was as if I lived next door. The fact that the little girl was involved showed the extent of her love for both her parents. It also proved too hard for her to ignore that her mother really cared about her.
The contributing characters were believable and made the main couple seem more in need of love and understanding. The emotional toll was heart wrenching but well worth the read. The ending was surprising. I didn't expect the happily-ever-after that I wanted to see.
I certainly recommend that you read this story. The sensuality was classy and non-offensive. This is definitely a book for all genres to enjoy. - Brenda Talley
