Excellent discussion of the Copernican Revolution

I was privileged to receive an advanced copy of this book from the author when I took a college course for which he is the professor. This book is incredibly accessible to anyone with an interest in learning about how human's discovered they were not the center of the universe. It begins with a historical account of how early civilizations viewed themselves and the heavens. It goes on to describe Copernicus's discovery and the aftermath it created. The book hits on all the major players following Copernicus, including a very interesting discussion of Kepler's contributions. I was especially interested in the information surrounding Galileo's discoveries and his issues with the Catholic Church. The writing flows well and the language used is not overly technical. Overall, an excellent book on a time in our history which is often overlooked or lost in our modern thinking. Honestly, the end notes alone are worth the price of the book as they offer a ton of information both related to and not related to the Copernican Revolution. I won't give anything away but there are many amazing things to be found in the end notes.

Good introduction to the origins of modern astronomical thinking

This is an excellent textbook written to be accessible to high school students, undergraduates, or general readers encountering this material for the first time. The author is careful to establish contexts, especially in the European world, essential to understanding the world of Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo. Somewhat more depth is available through the extensive endnotes and, of course, the other secondary sources cited, which are generally current and authoritative. A large fraction of the text is devoted to Galileo, his astronomical work, and his relationships with the Church, but with relatively little attention to his physics. There is a short treatment of Cartesian and Newtonian physics, completing the Copernican revolution, almost as an appendix to the larger Galileo section, so a typical history of science course on this material would probably look for additional readings on physics and Newtonian science. But as an introduction to the Copernicus-Kepler-Galileo parts of the history of science, this book is a very good choice. The addition of an index would enhance its value as a textbook.

Excellent History-Fascinating Science

I have read a lot of science histories and this easily stands among the best. The author does an incredible job of "setting the scene", putting us in the minds of those at the time. I had many questions about the Copernican Revolution that this book answered and more. Great overview of Copernicus, Galileo, Brahe, Kepler and their theories. Outstanding job of explaining how their theories were accepted (or not) and the changing role of the church throughout the time in question. If you like history, science, or even better, a great history of science, this book is a must. A book that takes you right into the time and discoveries which challenged where we actually are (and are not) in the universe. I certainly don't want to have any 'spoilers here, but one scene in this book was described so eloquently, while Galileo was making an epoch changing discovery/realization, that it was literally an 'edge of my seat' moment in this book for me, like I was at a major discovery. I really enjoyed this book.

The professor was not that great, but I am definitely keeping this book for future reference. If you are an undergraduate, and are thinking of heading into the PH field, or something related, this is worth buying to keep for yourself. I only wish there was a PDF form of it

Very Helpful

I bought this book sight unseen because Barnes & Noble did not have any book on Publisher 2010 in their store. I have read the entire book, and it was very helpful. I learned a lot and liked the concise listing of steps to perform any function as well as the accompanying diagrams or images showing the screen views. The one disadvantage is that it turned out there was additional material that was an accompaniment to this book that could be purchased separately that I was unaware of. So each unit called for additional sample digital files to work from that I did not have. I did successfully work around that by creating my own similar "publication" work sheets.

Book has several formula errors in it starting at Chapter 1

This book starts out with errors on pages 8 and 9 of the book when calculating simple Present and Future Values.
I would not recommend this book to anyone studying for the PMP, you will fail the math portion if you relied on
this book.
I am disappointed after purchasing it.

AGAIN... this book has errors in it. In fact...you can find the EXACT same math problems and formats in Rita Mulcahy's and Andy Crowe's PMP prep books!

Fatally confused and sloppy

If you're looking for a book to help you with PMP certification concepts and the related mathematics, this book is likely to do you much more harm than good. It is one thing to have study material that contains the occasional errata, but when the errors become so numerous and compounded that you end up spending most of your time trying to work out what in the book is correct and what is not, you have firmly crossed the line between study guide and doorstop.

I don't even own a copy of this book. My girlfriend was trying to use it to prepare for her PMP exam, occasionally asking for help with bits of the math. After struggling with the EMV decision tree section, she gave it to me look through. This section looks for all the world like it was written by someone with minimal experience with math and risk management who was given a 10-minute crash course on it, and then six months later, sick with the flu, was told to write up a study guide. Really, it is that bad.

There is no way to understand what a mess this is without giving some specifics. I feel duty-bound to do this here. It is easy to say a book is awful; I want to carefully show why.

The section purports to teach a single simple form of a decision tree problem, where there are two possible decisions, each with an up-front cost and two distinct outcomes that have their own impact and probability. The object is to evaluate which is the decision with least risk, that is, with the highest expected value outcome.

The sample problem invites us to consider a company's make-or-buy decision:

If "make", initial cost is $100,000, with an 80% chance of "success" (impact $0) and 20% chance of "failure" (impact $40,000).
If "buy", initial cost is $75,000, with a 40% chance of "success" (impact $80,000) and 60% chance of "failure" (impact $70,000).

The make and buy costs are given without indicating that they are costs. No demerits for this, because it is obvious... except it becomes clear eventually that to the author it is anything but obvious, as I will show.

There is no indication whether an amount given for an impact is positive or negative. In the example problems that follow the sample problem, the problem solutions infer that all failure outcomes should be interpreted as negative amounts, but in the sample problem, the entire issue is hopelessly muddled. The book's brief description of how a decision tree works doesn't give any clues. (A failure outcome in real life can certainly be a positive amount, usually just an amount less than the initial outlay for the decision leading up to it.) The fact that the whole thing is left ambiguous is, in my opinion, because the author does not quite know what they are doing, and is essentially punting on it to avoid opening up a can of worms that might mean missing the print deadline.

Don't believe me? Read on.

In Step 1 of the solution, the book says the expected monetary value (EMV) of the buy/success outcome is $75,000 + (40/100) * $80,000 = $107,000. The math here is correct, but the answer is wrong, because the $75,000 is a cost, not a positive impact. It should be -$75,000 + (40/100) * $80,000 = -$43,000. But that hardly seems like a positive outcome. Perhaps the impact value of $80,000 has a different meaning? What could that be, though? Is it the net outcome (i.e. with the cost built in)? Obviously not; otherwise, why add in the cost in the first place?

Here is what I think might have happened:

a) The author picked the numbers for the sample problem randomly
b) Then, the author plugged them into the correct formula, got a negative number, and thought "how can that be right?" (in fact, a "successful" outcome might only be relatively so in real life, therefore sometimes it can be negative). What to do? Perhaps go back and figure out where they went wrong?
c) Nah! Just change that -$75,000 to $75,000 and rock on!

The author probably had some very minimal understanding of EMV and was probably just trying to muddle through using equations from some other book.

In Step 2 of the solution, the book says that the EMV of the buy/failure outcome is, and here I need to quote:

"$75,000 + $70,000 = (-) $145,000 (recall that because this outcome has a negative impact on the project, the EMV is shown with a minus sign.)"

This really gives the game away; whoever wrote this has no idea what they're doing and can't be bothered to figure it out. For starters, the 60% probability is nowhere to be seen. But mainly, the author's mind is just insisting on a result that makes sense to them, and is making stuff up to justify it. I searched the book in vain for the part I was supposed to "recall" which told me that an EMV with a negative outcome must be shown with a minus sign. Here is what I think happened:

a) The author was in a hurry and forgot about the 60%
b) Then, the answer came out to $145,000, which the author was awake enough to realize couldn't be right, because it's larger than the "success" outcome! What to do? Perhaps go back and figure out where they went wrong?
c) Nah! Put a minus sign in front of that, dude! Problem solved.

If an action taken turns out to be a "failure", why does this make $1 suddenly equal -$1? If the action is a "success", why does the $75,000 cost suddenly become a $75,000 windfall? These are just two of many obvious questions that spring immediately to mind.

Imagine a reader at this point whose math is rusty and is just trying to get the hang of this decision tree stuff. Will they ever recover from this?

In Step 3 of the solution, the book adds the results from Step 1 and Step 2 together to get an overall EMV of -$138,000. Well, now that is bad math. That sum is actually -$38,000. OK, just a typo. There are lots in this book.

The real answer, by the way, is -$75,000 + ((40/100) * $80,000) + ((60/100) * -$70,000) = -$85,000. That is assuming that the "failure" impact should be read as negative.

So the exposition of the sample solved problem is just hopelessly wrong, and no amount of pure carelessness or pure incompetence can account for it. It's obviously both. It leaves the aspiring student in such a hopeless position, that I really wish there were such a thing as authorial malpractice for instructional books.

In the exercise problems immediately following the sample solved problem, the author seems to forget about their maverick rule of negating the "failure" EMV value. Instead, the solution method is almost entirely correct, except the author persists in counting the up-front cost of a decision as income and not a loss, so the answers are nonsensical. For example, in Exercise 1, the reader must determine whether to build or upgrade given:

Build $100,000: 65% chance of success, impact $50,000; 35% chance of failure, impact $90,000
Upgrade $50,000: 80% chance of success, impact $60,000; 35% chance of failure, impact $50,000

Now obviously, the $100,000 and $50,000 are up-front costs associated with the build and upgrade decisions, respectively. So just glancing at this problem it is easy to see that the decision to build is a loser, but because the author treats the up-front figures as benefits and not costs, the book gives "build" as the right answer. The exact same thing is done for all ten example problems, which all have the same form.

So in the exercise problems the author has the formula right, but never stopped to think, in writing all ten example problems, what the meaning of the dollar amount associated with the initial choice was. Someone can only make this mistake if they don't understand project management. Not very reassuring, to put it mildly.

Great Teacher or Home Experiment Resource

I am never disappointed by a Janice VanCleave Book!
This book lends itself well to experimenting with earth science using the scientific method. It outlines the purpose, materials needed, procedure, results expected, and explanation of results for each experiment. Experiments are included in the areas of space, rocks and minerals, movement of the earth's crust, erosion, atmosphere, weather, and ocean. The best thing is that they use common, easy to obtain materials!
I use these books in my classroom a lot!

Packed with errors.

This book looks like it tried too hard to be about astronomy. It takes reasonable experiments about basic scientific principles and tacks on explanations related to astronomy that ignore other factors (i.e. both reflectivity and distance from the sun are seperately listed as the reason a planet is hotter when Venus is neither the darkest nor the closest), are overly obscure, or just plain wrong (appearance of 'the man in the moon' caused by shadows).
I have worked in an astronomy museum for six years, and this book has me pausing to try and comprehend what the book is trying to do. I am not familiar with the other Janice VanCleave books, but I specifically recommend AGAINST this one.

I wish I hadn't bought this...

This book is a big disappointment. I don't know very much about astronomy, but I have done a lot of experiments with my kids. The better experiments in this collection are basic scientific experiments we have done before with a page of explanation on how it relates to astronomy...or how it is a simulation of something in astronomy, which I feel is misleading to the kids.

Other experiments are not even experiments, but demonstrations of things so obvious that most kids can visualize them without a demonstration. For example, stirring tea leaves in a jar with a pencil to simulate a hurricane on Jupiter.

Only one experiment sounded interesting--a sun dial that can act as a compass. But wait! The compass is only accurate two days out of the year, and there is no explanation of the science behind the experiment.

I want my money back!!!!

Dr. Bharat Bhushan received an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, an M.S. in mechanics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1973 and 1976, respectively, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, NY in 1980, Doctor Technicae from the University of Trondheim at Trondheim, Norway in 1990, a Doctor of Technical Sciences from the Warsaw University of Technology at Warsaw, Poland in 1996, and Doctor Honouris Causa from the National Academy of Sciences at Gomel, Belarus in 2000. He is a registered professional engineer (mechanical). He is presently an Ohio Eminent Scholar and The Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Research Faculty Advisor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Director of the Nanotribology Laboratory for Information Storage & MEMS/NEMS (NLIM) at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He is an internationally recognized expert of tribology and mechanics on the macro- to nanoscales, and is one of the most prolific authors. Dr. Bhushan is an accomplished organizer. He organized the first symposium on Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Systems in 1984 and the first international symposium on Advances in Information Storage Systems in 1990, both of which are now held annually. He is the founder of an ASME Information Storage and Processing Systems Division founded in 1993 and served as the founding chair during 1993-1998. His biography has been listed in over two dozen Who's Who books including Who's Who in the World and has received more than two dozen awards for his contributions to science and technology from professional societies, industry, and U.S. government agencies. He is also the recipient of various international fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for Senior Scientists, Max Planck Foundation Research Award for Outstanding Foreign Scientists, and the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. He is a foreign member of the International Academy of Engineering (Russia), Byelorussian Academy of Engineering and Technology and the Academy of Triboengineering of Ukraine, a honorary member of the Society of Tribologists of Belarus, a fellow of ASME, IEEE, STLE, and the New York Academy of Sciences, and a member of ASEE, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.

Braudel was the most prominent member of the Annales school of history in post-World War II France. This history, originally published in 1963 as part of curriculum reform for French secondary students, was eventually judged by French school teachers as too hard for their students and was withdrawn. More than half the book is devoted to the development of Western civilization, and despite the judgment of French school teachers, it is suitable for serious high school students along with undergraduate and public libraries.

A leader of the Annales school, which reacted against the prominence of politics and personalities in historiography, Braudel wrote based on la longue dur{‚}ee, emphasizing the material basis of daily life--the routine workings of commerce as it changes over the long term. This outlook has gradually permeated the profession, and, as so often happens when a good idea proves unstoppable, its proponent takes a turn at textbook writing. This is the late Braudel's 1962 lesson for French university students on the origin of European, Islamic, Indian, Asian, and New World civilizations. As a text it wasn't widely adopted, perhaps because France was then in a political uproar, pitting its colonialists--heirs to the civilizing mission of the nineteenth century--against decolonizers. And the book bears that sign of its time: The colonial motif pops up everywhere, presented as a timeless feature of ways of life in collision. So it was at the Battle of Tours in 732, which stopped the Muslim juggernaut; and so it is now in the anti-Western sentiments in the Arab world. Whether the conflict split religion and religion, town and country, or liberty and right, the colonial view benefits from Braudel's phenomenal depth of knowledge and synthesizing agility, and his palpable curiosity enlivens the sometimes deadly textbook form. The First and Still the Best Multidisciplinary World History

When Fernand Braudel originally published this text in the sixties, he became a pariah at the Sorbonne. In retrospect that disapprobation was the kind of seal of approval that "banned in Boston" came to embody. Previous histories drilled deep into one facet of history. Braudel's was a pioneering effort in multidisciplinary historical analysis. It captures the historical flow that evolves civilizations, sacrificing only the detail outside the themes. Even subsequent to "A History of Civilizations," other historians have been unable to write a thematic survey that matches this original. And don't be tempted to skip the "soft" introductory chapters with titles like "The Study of Civilization Involves All the Social Sciences," and "The Continuity of Civilizations." These tee up the hard topics, like "The Greatness and Decline of Islam." There's method in Braudel's approach, and it takes patience. Braudel's translator, Richard Mayne had his job cut out for him. The complex syntax is that of a French intellectual of the sixties, and it is retained in Mayne's text, but you become accustomed to it. Don't look for maps or photographs in this Penguin Paperback; the text alone is six hundred pages. There's only one other book in this space, "From Dawn to Decadence," by Jacques Barzun. In my view they are complementary.

So so, but ....

Braudel is considered one of the great 20th c. historians. He fought the French educational establishment to broaden the scope of history to include material from sociology, anthropology, geography, etc., and above all economics. This was in opposition to the traditional kings and battles approach, and this book was intended as a textbook (not accepted by the authorities). Arguably the movement's been quite fruitful, but this book is a very mixed bag - occasionally excellent, sometimes quite bad, and usually mediocre to good. It's also not a history of civilizations - it deals with what Braudel considered the great living civilizations - and rather than being history as usually understood, it describes primary characteristics of each with some development over time. Even the treatment of each "civilization" varies a great deal from one to the next, e.g. considerable space is devoted to the literature of Latin America while not to the others. The civilizations included are the Muslim World, Black Africa, the Far East (includes India), then Europe and European civilization elsewhere (to which he devotes half the book).

In spite of the many gaps, blind spots and weaknesses, there are some real high points and original insights. For example, Braudel points out that, while the Crusades are usually seen as unmitigated folly in the West, and while they achieved nothing lasting on land, at their beginning the Mediterranean was dominated by Islam while at their end it was dominated by the West. This had important consequences limiting Islamic power and culture while removing constraints from those of the West. He's probably at his best dealing with the West and Islam, and at his worst dealing with Latin America. To his credit he doesn't pass over Africa as so many do, but gives it reasonable attention, describing among other things the great trading societies which grew up as a result of contact with Islam. His take on the United States is fairly sane, with useful analyses of the evolution of American capitalism and of the centralization of power and growth of bureaucracy in the Executive branch of the Federal government. But the section on the US has its share of romanticisms and a couple chauvinisms (that statement probably applies to all societies outside Europe, and perhaps to European ones as well). His take on the Soviet Union is balanced to slightly sympathetic, although it's odd that we never hear of the millions killed by Stalin (or Mao).

Braudel's rejection of traditional historical narrative, with its landmarks and mileposts, sometimes leaves you wondering what, where and when it is that he's talking about. More importantly, he has a great weakness for making overarching generalizations, usually devoid of rational arguments stocked with facts which might lead us to share his conclusions. It's often transparently obvious that these generalizations can neither explain the entire phenomenon they purport to explain, nor can the explanation be so simple. After a few of these you start to question Braudel's judgment. He also spends a fair amount of time contemplating then-contemporary problems and speculating about the future. He defends this, but his performance is unconvincing, particularly in light of events since he wrote (1962). All the same, for someone who doesn't expect this book to be comprehensive or even, and who reads it along with world histories which are, it's still worth reading for its strengths and for the not-infrequent original insights.
