Book for teachers of French

Grammar has to be taught in order to master a foreign language.This book explains why and how .This is not a grammar textbook for people who are starting studying, but for teachers. The book does not cover all aspects of French grammar, it is more about the methods of teaching.I am half-way through it and am really enjoying it ( I am learning French on my own ). I wish my children in school were taught French the way it is recommended in this book.

Essential Book for all French Teachers

As a recent graduate with a BA in French, I wanted to find book that would help me present French grammar in innovative ways. Teaching French Grammar in Context is amazing for this because Katz and Stacey present French linguistics and L2 research in simple language and give concrete suggestions about how to implement current L2 findings. No matter how long you have been teaching French I think this book as some wonderful insights.

This book is a great resource for me, as a teacher, especially with advanced students. It highlights many nuances in French that are sometimes quite troubling to students, and more than that, explains them so very clearly!

English singer/songwriter Nick Drake was a nearly unknown cult figure when he died from an overdose of antidepressants in 1974, but the number of his admirers has grown steadily ever since. Musicians in particular are drawn to his delicate, melancholy folk tunes and to the legend of his depressive isolation and suicide at age 26. Humphries, Drake's first biographer, faced difficult working conditions without the cooperation of Drake's producer, Joe Boyd, or of Drake's family, and without even permission to quote Drake's lyrics. Still, he has done his legwork, although exact causes of Drake's decline remain unclear. Interviews with schoolboy chums reveal that, far from being withdrawn, Drake engaged in normal boyish hijinks. And although he was frustrated by his lack of success, it appears that Drake was doomed to obscurity by his own refusal to allow Island records to promote him, rather than by the indifference of the music world. Futhermore, although Drake certainly was drawn into the drug culture surrounding the London music scene of the late '60s, his involvement was apparently not enough to explain his downfall. Though a skillful and engaging writer, Humphries tends to go overboard with setting the scene: he manages to discuss the sinking of the Titanic, the British role in Burma and the Brontes before getting to Drake's birth. Although unable to solve the mystery of his death, Humphries does manage to make the singer seem more human, albeit at the expense of Drake's romantic myth. Photos.

A STONE IN A TIN CAN...

I was very disappointed in this book - and while some of that disappointment is with the style of writing Mr. Humphries employs here, there's more to it than that. Writing a biography is a tricky proposition at best. In the case of an artist like Nick Drake - reclusive and withdrawn, with only one interview given during his brief lifetime - it's a task even more daunting than one would usually expect. Humphries has written bios of other musicians - Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, Tom Waits, &c - and has evidently built a career and reputation in this area. I'm sure that he felt drawn to the music of Nick Drake in some ways, rather than simply choosing an artist about whom to write in the hope of selling tons of books - there are innumerable choices that would have garnered him greater sales - but without the cooperation of two critical people in Nick's life (his sister Gabrielle and his manager/producer Joe Boyd), given the nature of his subject, the project was more or less doomed from the start.
Humphries mentions in his forward that Joe and Gabrielle `had decided not to cooperate' - and since Joe's Warlock Music is the publisher of all of Nick's songs, this also meant that Humphries would be unable to quote from Nick's lyrics. He was thus reduced to quoting Gabrielle and Joe from previously available sources. Molly and Rodney Drake, Nick's parents, were deceased, so no direct conversations between them and the author were possible either. The only other sources left for him upon which to draw were the remembrances of various friends of Nick and written articles about the man and his music. What emerges from all of this is inevitably a choppy picture of the man - not unsympathetic, but jarring and incomplete. Many parts of the book are simply strings of quotes strung together - and too many of the gaps have been filled in by well-meaning but ultimately tedious anecdotes about the music scene of the 60s and 70s in general. Referring to the musicians and bands emerging from the public school scene in the UK of the time, Humphries mentions Genesis coming out of Charterhouse to begin their `windy, wuthering road' to success - a reference to their `Wind and wuthering' album of the late 70s. He's trying a little too hard here for my tastes, I'm afraid.
Another irritating practice of Humphries is that he contradicts himself in too many places to mention. He can't seem to settle on his own opinion. On p. 93, he says `FIVE LEAVES LEFT is an astonishingly assured and mature debut' - on p. 94, he says `Lyrically the songs on FIVE LEAVES LEFT are largely unremarkable'. Huh? On p. 89, he speaks warmly of how well Robert Kirby (Nick's school chum and string arranger on his first two albums) worked with Nick's songs: `...his arrangements remain an integral part of the distinctive sound of Nick's debut album' - then, again from p. 94: `...perhaps the arrangements are a tad lush'. This sort of `playing both sides' persists throughout the book. These are not instances of Humphries quoting the opinions of others (at least they are not presented in that way) - these are his own words.
The publisher, Bloomsbury, must also be taken to task, for their (lack of) editing - there are several errors in the book that have nothing to do with writing style, but everything (apparently) to do with allowing one's computer spell-check program to act as an editor. This point may seem to be a bit picky, but in context of my other problems with the book, it merely added to my inability to appreciate it.
There's another review below that wisely suggests that those interested in Nick allow his music to speak for him - and this is of course the closest we can come to him, for his music came from his heart and soul. Over the years since his death, it has become much more widely appreciated than it was in his lifetime - sadly this is the case in too many who die before their time. There is beauty in that music. Humphries speaks in several places of the darkness of Nick's lyrics (but, being unable to quote from them, gives no examples), that his depression was a result of an adolescent never coming into maturity, unable to cope with the world - and many of the songs were dark, without a doubt. There were, however, many moments of light and beauty. One only has to listen to the first track on his debut album (`Time has told me' from FIVE LEAVES LEFT) - to me, the song is one that speaks of hope and patience, of learning and recognizing the important things that are worth waiting for. That sounds like maturity and good judgment to me. Nick may well have been a troubled soul - but he was not without happiness, and he obviously understood and appreciated things that a person stuck in adolescence would not.
Near the end of the book, when Humphries is writing of the release of Nick's final four songs, and some additional material - early home recordings and alternate takes - he quotes both Nick's parents and Joe Boyd as saying that they were trying to make sure that anything they released reflected only well on Nick, that they were concerned with how he was represented, that he deserved that consideration. I think that he deserves better than this bio - that might seem harsh, but there's simply too much contradiction and padding here. Rather than a 270+page book, this could have been edited down to a decent magazine article. There are a lot of facts here, but very little understanding. If you have the opportunity to view it, check out the fine documentary A SKIN TOO FEW - it's a much more satisfying portrait of this gentle man.

A solid biography of a shadowy life

Patrick Humphries' greatest achievement in writing a biography of Nick Drake, one of the great singer songwriters of his (or any) generation, is that he was able to find enough material to fill a full-length book. Which is both a blessing and a curse: the last three years of his life must have been a nightmare for Nick Drake, a young man who along with his considerable talent also, it appears, crafted an image of himself as a loner artiste, an image which became the reality that eventually consumed him. Therefore, Humphries was faced with the daunting task of making interesting the interviews with friends and relatives, who, almost without exception, claimed that Drake was quiet, incommunicative, present but not really all there; in short, there wasn't much story to tell: three brilliant albums, a staggering mental breakdown and depression, and a death that may have been accidental, may have been suicide, but in any case was as tragic as it was inevitable. Humphries great achievement is to take the simple facts of Drake's life and put them in a context that makes them seem belong-able to a real human being, rather than part of the myth that Nick Drake has become. Most fascinating is his portrayal of the music scene that Drake became associated with via his manager, Joe Boyd, the legendary producer of many of the great British folk-rock groups of the late 60s; in fact, while Drake is the centerpiece of Humphries' book, Boyd's colorful presence in Nick Drake's life and his role in 60s rock often outshines the story of Nick Drake himself, simply because so much more is known of Boyd. Made most clear by this biography is that to know more about Nick Drake than we knew before would be virtually impossible, because, more so than even a man like Bob Dylan, Drake WAS his music. The story of the music and how it was developed, crafted, and recorded, is therefore the core of Nick Drake's life, and I found the details surrounding these to be the most insightful of the book.

Diminish the aura

Any biographical information about the life of Nick Drake has to be welcomed and Patrick Humphries has done his best in tracking down Nick's old aquantinces. But you'd have to be close to illiterate not to figure out there's an awful lot of padding and repetition in this book.

The life and recording career of Nick Drake was so short that ironiclly the lack of visual images featured here only adds to the aura. It's as if we only had a miniscule visual record of Nick Drake. On the contrary, photos of him seem to be in relevant abundance and seeing them would have done more to humanize his past than speculation and half-forgotten anecdotes.

A lot of time was given over to descriptions of Nick's appearance and there was some interesting details supplied by the photographers who shot the album photos. But I felt myself wanting to see the actual photos of Nick and interpret them for myself rather than read about what somebody else thought about them. Interpreting already available photos is hardly great biographical insight.

As such I think this would have been a much more complete reflection on Nick's life if it had been released as a photo book. That way the biographical text could have been shortened to 100 pages or so of the most relevant and important information and the rest of the book could include a photographic record of Nick Drake with the complete photo sessions of every album.

About the Author
EDWARD DE BONO studied at Christ Church, Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar). He also holds a PhD from Cambridge and an MD from the University of Malta. He has held appointments at the universities of Oxford, London, Cambridge and Harvard. In 1967 de Bono invented the now commonly used term 'lateral thinking' and, for many thousands, indeed millions, of people worldwide, his name has since become a symbol of creativity and new thinking. He has written numerous books, which have been translated into 34 languages, and his advice is sought by Nobel laureates and world leaders alike.

A life-changing book! Especially for computer programmers like me.

This book was a life changing book when I first read it about three decades ago. I have since upgraded from paper books to ebooks and HAD to have it on all my PDA devices; Note 4, Nexus 10, Droid Pro, Charm, etc. Great wisdom from a brilliant man - Edward de Bono!

Brilliant!

Wondering why this is not as mainstream as his other work. When people talk about ways to develop creative thinking, they normally give you exercises that MIGHT inspire you to come up with better solutions, maybe not. Edward de Bono is able to systematically break down the process of "thinking out of the box" in a way that no one else has. That may sound like an oxymoron, but indeed, he has studied and practiced lateral thinking since at least the 1960's, and therefore has been able to develop a system that will work every time, and not just a series of hit-or-miss examples that often do not work together as a meaningful whole. Just discovered this author and thought I would read all of his books, starting with this one. At first I thought it was going to be too dense for me to enjoy, but stuck with it and got a lot out of it on how to approach problem solving in a different way.

About the Author
Dr. Karla Turner focused on the psychology and ethics of those alleging that they had been abducted, visited, probed and tormented by extraterrestrial beings. As a former college instructor who held a doctorate in Old English Studies as well as a B.A. and M.A. earned in both America and England respectively; Turner gave her heart and soul to help those trying to make sense of the things that didn't make sense. Dr Turner lost her battle to breast cancer in 1996 but her legacy to the paranormal field is all but not forgotten.

A welcome re-issue of Karla Turner's greatest work

`Taken' was the second book (of three) published by Arizona-based professional academic and educator Dr. Karla Turner PhD, who died of breast cancer at the tragically young age of 48. Turner had a stable and loving marriage and a family, and for several years prior to her death on 10 January 1996 worked to publicize the reality of the alien abduction phenomenon to academia and to a wide public audience. She appeared several times on mainstream media/TV, and you can find uploaded videos of her lectures and interviews on the web.

Her first book, `Into the Fringe' published in 1992, is essentially autobiographical and chronicled the process of how she became aware that abduction by `alien entities' was the origin of a range of bizarre and otherwise inexplicable events which afflicted her family over many years. These included multiple close-proximity sightings of UFOs; episodes of missing time of several hours' duration; night-time visitations; persistent, repeated and dramatic patterns of body scarring and various poltergeist-type activity experienced by different members of the family, especially by her husband Casey (Elton) and son David. It recounts a journey from puzzlement and ignorance to eventual reluctant acknowledgement that the abduction phenomenon was the only explanation to fit the data.

In the months following the publication of ITF, Turner was contacted by scores of people with stories essentially similar in content to those of her own family, was drawn to interview these people and investigate the cases herself. `Taken' chronicles eight of these cases, all women, and as she states in the introduction:

"The correlation of evidence from their accounts greatly widens the parameters of the abduction scenario and points to certain aspects, previously disregarded or avoided, in need of serious exploration" (p1)

The 13-page introduction to `Taken' is one of the most concise, elegant and accurate summaries of what was known about the phenomenon in 1994 - and, it needs to be said, not a great deal more is understood about it even now. The phenomenon is complex, multi-layered and deep, and Turner's serious investigation reveals unexpected and surprising detail about the abductors' MO and intentions as well as some of the more unusual peripheral aspects less frequently seen.

The main body of the book consists of eight sequential chapters, one devoted to each of the eight abductees' cases. All are disguised with pseudonyms. The material is complex, and more appropriate for the reader with some experience and prior knowledge of the phenomenon. Turner's hands-on investigative work is thorough; her handling of the abductees highly professional and her application of deductive reasoning to the accumulating evidence intelligent and impressive.

Following the eight case studies, the author attempts to correlate the data into patterns and between pp232-239 lays out full-page spreadsheets to analyze common factors in the reports: for example, six out of the eight reported episodes of childhood missing time; all eight reported missing time episodes as adults. Five reported medically confirmed ear implants; three had implants in the nose. Two had a medically confirmed missing fetus after 10 weeks of pregnancy; three reported being immersed in a liquid during abduction and feared they were being drowned until they discovered they could breathe - and so on. The frequency of clothes mix-ups - i.e. waking in the morning wearing clothes not your own, with what you were wearing when you went to bed missing and never again found - is common with abductees. Other phenomena include bruises, triangular body marks, claw-like scratches, puncture marks, rashes, blood on body or bed sheets and scoop-biopsy marks. Less tangible abduction markers seem to be a desire to live rurally and escape cities, a shift in attitudes, a sense of some foreboding disaster and the feeling of having a task to perform.

Some of the more disturbing reports (by half of those investigated) involve involuntary sexual contact with male abductees or with `adult hybrids,' one such incident reported to have taken place in the home of the abductee. This detail is significant in that these accounts were reported to Karla Turner in 1993: i.e. five years prior to the publication of Professor David Jacobs' controversial landmark book on the abduction phenomenon `The Threat' where this particular feature of `hybrid interaction' was first exposed to a wider readership. Jacobs was not, as we now know, either the first or the only researcher to whom these bizarre and very detailed narratives were described: that honor may go to Karla Turner.

The final two chapters are used for discussion of the collated evidence and the drawing of conclusions. One of Karla Turner`s most persistent and controversial claims was that elements within `the Government' occasionally abducted known abductees in order to glean information from them, using drugs to wipe their memories. This so-called `Mil-Ab' issue resurfaces in `Taken' even more forcefully than in ITF.

As you might expect from a professional academic she was a good literate writer. Dr. Turner's third and final published book on the phenomenon, `Masquerade of Angels' was actually written concurrently with `Taken' and in some way overlaps it. They are amongst the best work on the subject ever committed to print: serious, intelligent, groundbreaking and fearless in confronting the issues. Turner was no `New Ager' and her work retains its controversial reputation 15 years after her death. It deserves consideration alongside the best work of Budd Hopkins, Dave Jacobs, John Mack and Raymond Fowler, and brings a unique perspective of its own.

The 2013 edition:

Until now, original copies of `Taken' (indeed of all Karla's books, but especially this one) have been in great demand with high prices paid due to rarity, and good original copies seen as collectors' items. This new 2013 reprint is welcome not only in making this great work once again affordable for the average reader, but in correcting the few typos and grammatical errors in the original text and restoring it to its rightful place among the great works of the genre. Cask J. Thomson deserves the credit of initiating this project; he secured the valuable participation of Karla's widower Elton in editing the text.

An intelligent new foreword about Karla's work is penned by Nick Pope, and follows this short paragraph:

"For the sake of clarification Karla Turner passed away after a long struggle with breast cancer and underwent breast removal surgery and chemotherapy. Despite the common misconceptions it is unlikely that she was targeted by an individual, group or organization attempting to silence her."

It's a pity that Elton and the publishers felt the need to include this caution at the beginning of the new 2013 edition, but evidently the antics of conspiracy theorists over the past 17 years have made it necessary.

The new edition is in paperback only; it looks like we'll never see a hardcover edition of this great classic.

MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS!!

Mixed feelings/reactions to this one. Karla was dedicated to her cause and presents credible work throughout..no problems there! And there is an all time classic line posited by one of the abductees..when she confronts her abductors with.." why so secretive for so long?..if you were more open in your dealings with us there wouldn't be so much fear and controversy regarding your existence and or agenda". I couldn't have said it better myself. Since reading Rex Dutta and Jon Michel in the early 80's I have been in anticipation of global disclosure of these little sneaking fuglies..even believing it would be 'soon'. Whilst I have no doubts as to their presence/existence..I am left thinking it won't be - accepted as benign/benevolent or even real - in my lifetime. Also..their manipulation/exploitation of us isn't really ever worse than how we farm and harvest animals and have enslaved humans for centuries. We don't really look after each other globally...so why would we expect interlopers to regard us any better. I have no answers for my kids and grandkids...its a riddle/puzzle with no happy ending. An intrusion with no defense yet known. its such a grey area..no pun intended!!!
