Well worth it!

This is an independent piece by a very good artist who does most of his work for Udon.
It's a rare (in these times) opportunity for an artist to have published his own work.
And, just 'cause he's an "Artist" doesn't mean he doesn't write well either.

Won't spoil it, though of course how bizzaro it is "How?" I could spoil it but it's a neat "Secondary World" story where a person goes to another world that's radically different yet in a way familiar- it's a vehicle for a good story, a tradition that goes back to ERB's Mars stories. Executed with humor, a blend of seriousness and perfect illustration all the way through it's a nice thing to look into for Manga fans, fantasy art likers, "Heavy Metal" magazine crowds (though this isn't 'dirty') and for a good offbeat story.

Most of the "new" graphic novels coming out are re-prints of older stuff or just collections of published back issues. This is a stand alone unique story.

Just make sure you know what you're getting into..

Before buying this book.. you have to make sure, you're not expecting some deep emotional story with a complex plot.
The name of this graphic novel is RANDOMveus and that's exactly what you will get from this comic book. I won't really go
into details with the story or characters, but I had a great time reading through this one. The art is amazing and has the
unique style of Jeffery Cruz, no one does it quite like him. His panels are full of color, character, and life.
It's a very offbeat story, but if you're just looking for a comic with great art, and some comedic elements then yeah..

RandomVeus, some of the most amazing art I've seen since J Scott Campbell or Humberto Ramos, and the writing is reminiscent of the older Deadpool series or any of the Image comics, it's phenomenal

About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Ronald Rogowski is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and served from 2007 to 2012 as editor-in-chief of the American Political Science Review. He is the author of Rational Legitimacy and Commerce and Coalitions and coauthor of Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power. He was elected in 1994 as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2007–08 was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. His current research focuses on long-term changes in inequality and effects of regional specialization in the European Union.

Great Book. Used it for my freshman PoliSci course. Was a good book other wise though and I still own it. It is more like a philosophy book rather than a PoliSci book. But if you are going to be majoring in PoliSci, I encourage you to read this book.

Big volume, lot of information

It is going to take me a long time to get through this tome. It is packed with information, reasonalbly well written. However, I feel that it is very verbose, things could easily be said in half the words used. That is a time waster, because you have to read through the useless stuff to get to the important stuff. Also, some sections might as well have been left out, such as the section on Postgres languages, there is not nearly enough information to get started. The book has too many words and too few good examples. Examples are not clear how to actually do, especially with the Postgres statements and commands. That said, there are not a lot of books about PHP and Postgres out there, so this is still very useful and I do recommend it as a read and reference book. I found Larry Ullman's books on PHP much more readable and useful as a learning tool, lots of good examples.

Start your education on PHP and PostgreSQL here

I have four other books on PHP and on PostgreSQL, but none which pair the two. I have been working on databases and web design since 2000. So, I have some experience behind these programming areas when I say that this is a good book to read if you want to introduce yourself to basic website design.

I have a few issues with the idea of loading the server with all the work of making the webpage, and I am uncomfortable in having an introduction to PostgreSQL that seems to stop so short. But, I have to say, if this gets people working with these two wonderful tools, then this is a fine place to start.

The book covers the introduction to PHP very well. I think it has one of the most comprehensive introductions to PHP that I have seen. Unfortunately, as in most other books on PHP, there is no sense that it can handle images, shading or quality website design. When you want to finally master these capabilities in PHP design, see "PHP Solutions" to continue the education found in this book.

As to PostgreSQL, its a decent and recent introduction, but stops far short of any display of what this database can really do. Unfortunately for PostgreSQL, there arn't enough books on it to give it the visibility it deserves. In this book PostgreSQL is relegated to a minimal support position for the website design. Given that this database can be the backend tier for a three tier commercial business that has multiple websites, it should have been given much more prominence. PostgreSQL has a more advanced set of data types than any other database and it's one of the few multi-platform databases that won't cost an arm and a leg. Try getting Oracle or SQL Server to do data arrays. SQL Server is my second favorite database, but I can't afford to buy even the standard version, perhaps the Workgroup edition will be able to serve me on Windows.

So give some more respect to PostgreSQL, it runs multi-terabyte databases on fortune 500 company servers, it is complete and ready to work right from the download, and it only costs you the time you want to spend to learn how to use it. I agree SQL Server has builtin analysis and datamining capability, but at $20,000 - $50,000 for a datacenter site, I would have to have Donald Trump as a personal friend to afford it.

In summary, I recommend this book as an excellent "one stop" book to start your journey into commercial website design. Just don't let your education stop at the last page of the book. I took off one star on my evaluation because the book didn't expand on the real potential of these two software tools.

Excellent coverage of the basics

This book has outstanding coverage of the basics of PHP and Postgres 8 administration and usage. It is intelligently written and talks about the things you'll actually need to know when working with these technologies. I've had it for a couple years and still use it as a reference. If you want something more advanced, then get "Pro PHP" by Keven McArthur.

Couldn't get past the bigotry and judgement

I was very excited to read this book, but I'm glad I checked it out for free first. The author has clearly found something that works wonderfully for him, providing you believe in a god or gods. His mischaracterization of atheists (no influential/successful/compassionate atheists? really?) early on really put me off. Not only are there hundreds of LIVING influential/successful/compassionate atheists, but there are thousands of dead ones too, many of whom were probably too afraid to admit their atheism because of people like this author. We can't believe in interconnectedness? We are somehow lacking as human beings because we don't believe like the author does? We're not capable of great kindness, compassion and happiness? Not true. Your religious belief or lack thereof has nothing to do with your ability to live a truly compassionate, purpose-filled, meaningful life. Spirituality is not just for the religious as this author sadly presumes.

The book captivated my attention from the start

The book captivated my attention from the start. Although the author truthfully told of his colourful past it was encouraging how he totally turned his life around. As this was early in the book you automatically engaged with him as most of us have in our lives done things which we are ashamed of or have someone in our close families that have gone off the straight and narrow.

The book explains in great depth how we must look at the bigger picture in our lives and explains that had we not done things wrong then we couldn't move on and turn things round to better ourselves.

The author also makes you sit up and really think about your life, your work and your ambitions. Whilst reading the book you realise that you CAN change situations and you do not have to put up with the same mundane things. He encourages you to look at the positive things in life rather than the negative.

The book also goes in depth about the universal energy and really makes you notice things that you wouldn't normally ie how day changes to night, how the seasons change plants, flowers, trees and the weather. Most of us take for granted these things, that they are just there and they just happened, but the author makes you really think 'how do they happen' and 'why'.

The book, even when finished, makes you more aware of life around you and how it changes so quickly. After reading it you do think more of what you are doing and why. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

A rare pleasure

That is, to have a general opponent of Marxism in a certain field deal with Marxist views and analysis in such a clear and fair manner. In this case it is Hugh Collins, Fellow of Brasenose College (not particularly known for its radical tendencies) at the time and now a specialist in contract law at the London School of Economics who analyses the possibilities for a Marxist theory of bourgeois law, and he does so with skill and subtlety.

Collins compares various possibilities for a coherent and effective Marxist theory of law, drawing on historical materialism, alienation, class instrumentalism and various other general Marxist 'tools'. This allows him to approach the subject in a manner that becomes increasingly complex and in-depth, as in forming a general theory from these building blocks he is capable of assessing the internal consistency each step of the way. In so doing he rejects the simplistic views of G.A. Cohen and Evgeny Pashukanis, as well as criticizing Lenin and Engels (the latter wrongly attributed) for relying too much on class struggle alone as the determinant factor.

Collins in the end arrives at a comprehensive view that seems to be along the lines of Engels' actual conception of the relation between the legal superstructure and the economic basis, as seen in his letter to Conrad Schmidt (Oct. 27, 1890). Since Collins is surprisingly competent at assessing the value and use of various Marxist terms and tools, he can use the theory of relative autonomy to launch some serious criticisms at the application of Marxism to law in general, which I do not find compelling enough to change my mind but which are certainly worth examining for any radical interested in legal philosophy. It is rare enough to have opponents of Marxist theory make coherent and to-the-point counterarguments, so this deserves a wider reading, to which the reprint should hopefully contribute. It is also helpful for non-specialists that the writing is clear and concise in the best English traditions, and the book is less than 150 pages of actual text.

Highly recommended to serious readers

Few books in circulation deal specifically with Marxism and law, probably because the former assigns the latter a distinctly subordinate role among society's real determinants. In Marxian thinking, law has neither autonomy in practice - being an extention of class interest - nor autonomy in theory - being hopelessly intertwined with nonlegal structures. Bourgeois theorists, on the other hand, treat law as possessing the necessary degree of autonomy that their studies require. Collins hopes to fill the current gap in scholarship created by Marxism' general neglect of legal theory, and succeeds admirably.
Current works are combined with classical ones in highly stimulating fashion that both inform the reader and deepen understanding. Anyone who believes that the `rule of law` is about ensuring that our societal game is played fairly, should read this book. Those of a more skeptical persuasion will also benefit from the skillful treatment Collins, an Oxford Don, brings to the subject. Highly recommended to serious readers.

About the Author

Murugan Ramalingam is an associate professor and scientist ‘G’ at the Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR), Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, Christian Medical College Bagayam Campus, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. He is also an adjunct associate professor at the Tohoku University, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. Dr. Ramalingam’s current research interests focus on the development of multiphase biomaterials, through conventional to nanotechnology to biomimetic approaches, cell patterning, stem cell differentiation, and tissue engineering. He is the author of more than 125 publications, including peer-reviewed journal papers, conference proceedings, book chapters, authored books, edited books, and patents relevant to biomaterials and tissue engineering. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple biomaterials- and tissue engineering-related journals.

Pekka Vallittu is a full professor of biomaterials science in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Turku, Finland, and works as the dean of the Institute of Dentistry and the director of the Turku Clinical Biomaterials Centre. He is also an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam. Professor Vallittu’s research activity on fiber-reinforced composites started from his hobby of model aircraft and has lasted for more than 25 years. His first applications for fiber-reinforced composites were in dentistry, followed by active research to utilize fiber-reinforced composites as biomimetic materials, also in medicine. Professor Vallittu has more than 300 original research papers, 500 other papers and abstracts, and 140 granted international patents based on 17 innovations. He has been awarded a Distinguished Scientist Award in Prosthodontics and Implant Research by the International Association of Dental Research.

Ugo Ripamonti is a professor and the director of the Bone Research Laboratory, a research unit of the South African Medical Research Council and the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the medical school. Dr. Ripamonti is a national and an international scholar focusing on experimentation on tissue engineering of bone, tissue induction, and morphogenesis by transforming growth factor-βs and osteoinductive biomimetic matrices in preclinical and clinical contexts. He has received numerous awards, including the Marshall R. Urist Awarded Lecture at the Sixth International Conference on Bone Morphogenetic Proteins in 2006 in Dubrovnik. He has published more than 200 scientific papers, including patents and book chapters for specialists.

Wan-Ju Li is the principal investigator of the Musculoskeletal Biology and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also an affiliated faculty member in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Program, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center. Professor Li’s research interests include stem cell, tissue engineering, nanobiomaterial, and skeletal biology. He has received the Fellow Award for Research Excellence from the National Institutes of Health and the Young Investigator Research Award from the North American Spine Society. Professor Li has published 30 papers, nine book chapters, and more than 60 abstracts. He holds three patents in cartilage, intervertebral disc, and tendon/ligament applications. He also serves in the editorial board of the American Journal of Stem Cells, the Journal of Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering, the Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders, and the Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics.

This book did not meet my expectations. The description of the book led me to believe that the different materials used in substation design would be described in detail and show calculations. This book came up short. Even the title suggests that there would be sizes and design guides on how to size structures.

Great Manual for Structural Engineers

This manual is a great little design guide. In addition to covering the design of substation structures, it provides a great deal of background information about structural standards and design approaches in general. Things like base plate bolt design and wind design equations are explained in a way that is missing in many other references. The authors of this guide take the time to provide a few hints about why things are done a certain way, and not merely telling you what to do. As any good engineer knows, knowing the "why" is critical to good judgement and understanding how to approach atypical conditions.
