Grade 1-4-This narrative poem using simple rhymes tells Bessie Coleman's life story and creates a cadence of bold rhythms that young children will want to hear again and again. Paparone's superb folk-art illustrations, rendered in brilliantly colorful acrylic paintings, provide accurate visual details of the Texas cotton fields of Bessie's childhood, Chicago's vibrant African-American community during World War I, and Paris in the 1920s. Perspective is perfectly realized in the end papers, which give bird's-eye views reflecting the world Bessie must have seen in her first courageous flights. There are jewels of subtlety in Paparone's illustrations, too. In one early scene from Bessie's Texas school years, readers spy students' artwork on a bulletin board. There among the horses and houses that other children drew is Bessie's picture of white clouds against a blue, blue sky. She had already imagined her future, "flying free, flying true." This appealing story is all about having and realizing dreams. Even though Bessie Coleman died tragically young, Nobody Owns the Sky is very much a celebration of life as well as a tribute to a young woman who dared to dream big. The text tells of Coleman's life in a series of vivid scenes: her hard childhood picking cotton in Texas late in the 1800s, her disappointment that she couldn't afford to stay in college, her courage in going to France to learn to fly airplanes, her lectures and barnstorming trips across America, and her death in a Florida air show. Underlying the story is the message that although she encountered racial discrimination in her life, Bessie found freedom in fulfilling her dream of flight because "nobody owns the sky." Illustrating the deftly written verses, Paparone's acrylic paintings in pastel colors have the innocence and the power of folk art. An excellent introduction to Coleman's life and achievements. Nobody Owns the Sky

This book was about a young colored girl whose dream was to fly in the sky like the birds. It tells her tale about how she finally was able to fly even though everyone always was told her that she couldn't. I like this book because it involved both the difficulties of the different races and genders. The young colored girl ends up having to go to Paris to learn to fly and even though she dies in one of her flights she was still able to influence other young girls. After reading the book I felt motivated and empowered. The author teaches young to always stay stead fast to their dreams even if others around them tell them it can't happen

Absolutely awesome picture book biography! Told in verse and beautifully illustrated, the historical link between author and subject makes for an amazing teaching tool in the classroom! This book is so very underrated in the public's eyes. Buy a class set for your classroom!

Inspiration to those who Dream BIG!!

What an inspiring story for children to read. Bessie Coleman overcame various obstacles to become the first Black Aviator in the world, I believe that all children can benefit from her story and see that if they want to achieve something it takes determination and a "Can-Do" attitude. The rhyming pattern used to tell the story was great for younger grade-level students and the illustrations were colorful as well. I had an opportunity to read this to second graders, they were actively engaged. I followed up with a arts & craft activity based on the story, which students enjoyed. I would recommend this book, not only for Black History Month or Women's History Month, but anytime of the year.

Examples too Simple, Explanations too short...a missed opportunity.

Sencha Architect (SA) App Development is a very short book (about 93 pages of actual content). I am new to Ext JS but have been doing software development for over 10 years. So, I think I am aware of my own limitations vs limitations in the content of this book.

It covers the basic interface, creating a simple Sencha Ext app, simple sencha touch app, some tips/tricks and then publshing and packaging and other resources. Overall this is not a beginners book. But you could pick it up and follow it. Groner is trying to provide some insight on using Architect vs regurgitating online help descriptions, which I can appreciate. But I didn't feel like I was getting insight from an experienced Sencha developer on how to use SA in an intelligent way beyond simple, single web pages.

Groner attempts to briefly explain MVC (just 1 page), but I find it a clumsy definition and still left me bewildered. I do know what MVC is, but her definition is poorly presented. She has to mention MVC though because SA is an MVC oriented development approach. But explanations are short.. for everything. Quite often, I found myself asking "why do you have to do that ?".

So, this book lacks insight from an experienced developer about developing meaningful applications. The 2 examples she provides are overly simple and lack depth. I can understand you don't want to confuse the reader with complex examples but without meaningful examples, and taking the time to actually explain things, you can't appreciate the capabilities of SA and the development approach you need to take. The book is afterall called "App Development", not "Overly simple examples for clicking buttons"

The examples are for beginners, but it requires that you know a Ext JS to an intermediate level. Groner could have included more sophisticated examples to walk through but I think she was trying to appeal to a wide audience. But in doing so, this book misses the mark in terms providing insight into using SA. You would gain almost as much from the online videos than using this book. The screenshots are not very well set out, and at first are confusing. Frankly, she could have used more page space to improve the flow. There is clear numbering of the order of steps in the screen shots for doing the tasks. Groner points out where things go to accomplish the objective and there is not much else beyond briefly explaining it to support the MVC principles.

I was left with more questions about SA after reading it. The back cover is a bit misleading as the topics are covered, but not to an extent that you can get through a meaningful application.

So, should you get this book ? NO. There is a wealth of online information from Sencha, forums and blogs that you can glean to accomplish the same thing.

The examples on the book are too basic. I recommend Sencha Touch 2 and Learning Ext JS 4 before you read this book. You will get more out of this book that way, At least I did.

First rate history for the non-specialist.

Akira Iriye is Charles Warren Professor of American History at Harvard University, and is a noted historian of international institutions. This 1987 book is a well organized and well edited introduction to a complicated subject, the origins of what the Japanese call The Pacific War, and which we know as WWII in Asia and the Pacific.

The book's organization is straightforwardly chronological. His account of these years is less dramatic but easier to follow than that of John Toland in "The Rising Sun", even though Toland is a better writer than Iriye. Iriye has the advantage of having that period as his primary subject, whereas Toland was laying the groundwork for a dramatic account of the war itself. And Iriye takes pains to explain his conclusions in several different ways, a habit no doubt learned from teaching college undergraduate students, who are the primary target audience of this book.

Iriye clearly describes the step by step process by which Japan entrapped itself in a net from which it was in the end only able to escape by engaging in a suicidal war. He shows how extremely naive Japanese political and military leaders were to think that they could overturn the existing order in Asia without serious consequences. Ironically, most of them - Konoye, Tojo, Yamamoto, and others - could see the trap they were heading into, yet believed that there was no way out that would not be a disaster for Japan, and that war was the only way to preserve Japanese honor. Contrary to some impressions, Japanese at the highest levels of leadership knew very well that Japan was no match for the United States militarily. But things had deteriorated to the point that even the Atlantic Charter, a precursor of The United Nations, was viewed by the Japanese leadership simply as a declaration of war on Japan by the Anglo-American powers.

Iriye leaves little doubt that once Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with Hitler and Mussolini in 1938, FDR and his cabinet - Hull, Stimson, Knox, Acheson - saw war with Japan as inevitable. Their only goal was to try to gain time in order to avoid having to fight in both Europe and Asia at the same time. In the event, of course, America did both. A major irony of Japan's joining the Axis powers is that it provided none of the benefits Japan had hoped to gain from the alliance, while at the same time it ended all possibility of a rapprochement with Britain and the US. Japan had literally backed out onto a tree limb and then proceeded to saw it off.

Iriye delineates the development of China's influence on American policy in the Far East. By the late 1930's, China was clearly identified in the eyes of the American public as the victim of unjustified Japanese aggression. This was indeed an accurate assessment of the situation, but the strength and emotion with which it was held by the American public gave the Roosevelt administration very little room to maneuver with Japan, even had it been inclined to do so. Any accomodation in China that would have left Japan a way toward "honorable" retreat would have been seen by the American public, no less than Chiang Kai-Shek, as a complete betrayal of China. This was the trap Japan had entered when the Japanese government allowed the Japanese Army to turn the incident at the Marco Polo Bridge into an excuse to invade China proper, from which there was no escape other than through total war with America.

Japanese public opinion also played a role in polarizing events. Tojo even started contingency planning for riots should Japan decide to bow to American will and withdraw from China. And the fear of assassination by nationalistic fanatics in the Japanese Army was an ever-present factor in the decision making of the Japanese political leadership.

Did FDR cook up a conspiracy to lure the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor? Iriye thinks not, and gives pretty good reasons for his opinion, the most convincing one being that by the summer of 1941 the American political and military leadership knew from the broken Japanese diplomatic code that war with Japan was inevitable. No conspiracy was needed to precipitate war - it was just a matter of time before the Japanese would attack.

In a nutshell, according to Iriye's analysis, Japan had three alternatives open to it by 1939: 1. Withdraw from China and suffer the consequences: Loss of prestige, power, resources, and military position; 2. Follow a policy of "perseverance and patience", passively waiting for the unlikely chance that events would eventually turn in a direction more to Japan's advantage; 3. Take the offensive immediately, while Japan still had sufficient oil reserves to support aggressive naval operations, and before the ABCD powers (America, Britain, China, and the Dutch) could further prepare themselves. In the end, option 3 seemed the most preferable of three bad choices.

Iriye ends on an optimistic note, saying that the period from 1931-45 was an aberration in the history of Japanese-American relations. One certainly hopes that he is right.

In this book, Swamiji describes His spiritual journey as a child which led Him to the Himalayas and how He met his Guru - Dadagurudev Shiv Baba and other ageless yogis in the deep Himalayas. A recommended book for all the spiritual aspirants.
