Review of Roe, The Dragon Strikes This is an important book for the serious student of military and political history and for the veterans of the "Forgotten War" - and of other conflicts large and small, before and since. It is a sober, serious carefully organized and closely written work. That should not be read as dull or difficult. It is simply and elegantly composed in terms immediately accessible to any interested reader. I would suggest thatthe reader first scan the final chapter (16), "Looking Back", for a contextual summary of the author1s findings. After that, the Preface tells you who the author is and what motivates him. Itis brief, simple and overly modest. From this point on the chapters develop an account rangingfrom the historical relationships of Asians and Europeans over the last 150 years, to the political aftermath of WW2, the overheated ideological confrontations of "super powers", and the willful - if not entirely intentional, misunderstandings that led up to and resulted in the tragic mishandling of the (multiplex) strategies and tactics of the Korean War. Although it is told in simple language, this is not a simple tale. Roe does not seek or dispense blame. The book is a painstaking and rigorously objective attempt to make sense of the cascade of misconceptions, missteps and faulty decisions that were the pivotal crises of the Korean "Police Action" and the tragedy of that still unresolved war. If the reader discerns incompetence, rampant egotism, chauvinist arrogance or just plain stupidity, these are revealed by the actors themselves, in the context of their actions, and not by the conjecture or "interpretation" of the author. My personal bias should be made clear. Like Pat Roe I am a member of the Chosin Few. As he was a young 2nd Lt. in the 7th Marine Regiment, I was a young Sgt. in the 5th Marines.I came to know him personally a dozen years or so ago. I respect and admire his clear-headed intelligence, his uncompromising - if polite -honesty, his unquestionable personal integrity and his ability to look calmly and objectively at the facts and to organize and present them lucidly, without adjective or adverbial coloring. Roe is known throughout the membership of the Chosin Few for his remark at the first reunion of that fraternity in 1985. On the heels of much in the way of rhetoric and reminiscence and the emotional impact of encountering old comrades and mourning those lost, Roe summarized his viewpoint and his feelings. He wrote simply, "We did a good thing". Pat has done a good and valuable thing in this book. In the Preface he writes that the book is a product of six years of research and writing. This is his only misstatement in 450 pages. The book is the product of fifty years of attention and devotion to duty.

I consider this the best book I have read on the first six months of the Korean War. It accurately covers the conflict both before and after the entry of the Chinese. More importantly it gives excellent background on the Chinese, Korean, Soviet relations. It fairly identifies the deficiencies of the high command (Washington and Tokyo) and the problems faced by a badly depleted military force. It coordinates the actions of the Eighth Army and X Corps and identifies the lack there of. With only minor errors it accurately portrays the debacles of late November and early December, a feat rarely done. I know, I was at Koto-ri.

a little contrived

Brinton's Anatomy of a Revolution is based on a brilliant premise - that all revolutions go through specific "stages." Using the English, French, and Russian revolutions and the American War for Independence as his models, he seeks to show common threads between the four of them.
However, there are some flaws in his thesis. As one reader pointed out, Brinton never defines what a "revolution" is - a problem especially given the fact that many do not consider the American Revolution a revolution at all. But beyond this point, there are problems as well. His model does not fit each revolution very well - especially the English Revolution's "Thermidorian Reaction" (which Brinton uses to describe the "calm" after the relative chaos and violence one usually associates with revolution.) His argument on the origins of revolution is similarly does not fit all revolutions well.
However, it is a fascinating read, and Brinton does a remarkable job in briefly and succinctly summarizing each revolution, their causes and the major players and events in them. This, if for no other reason makes it a worthwhile read.

The Anatomy of Revolution provides the perfect companion for high school educators who want to step away from the stodgy lecture method of teaching the English, French, American, and Russian revolutions. The book is invaluable for assisting in creating lesson plans that discuss the characteristics and commonalities of revolutions. Once learned, a model can be created that students can use to analyze and evaluate any of the world's major and minor revolutions. Crane Brinton's book is a "must have" for any high school social studies teacher interested in creating similar lessons on the topic of revolution that foster higher levels of learning.

THE GRANDDADDY OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF REVOLUTIONS

I have always been an avid student of the great modern revolutions both as a matter of practical politics and in order to glean some insights into how they have affected human history. In short, how the ideas and practice of those revolutions have acted as nodal points on the further progress of humankind. Crane Brinton's little book was probably the first book I read that tried to put that idea into some kind of order. While some of the material in the book is dated and some has been superseded by events and further research every serious student of comparative revolutions depends in some way or another on his pioneering methodology.

Brinton took the four great revolutions of his time (the Chinese Revolution had not occurred when he originally wrote the book)-the English of the 17th century, the French and American of the 18th century and the Russian of the 20th century and drew some common conclusions from them. Here the American Revolution acted as a kind of control for viewing the others. While no one would deny that each great revolution had its own perculiarities some lessons, so to speak, can be drawn from the various experiences.

Brinton traced the role of ideas, all kinds of ideas, some fanciful some serious that accompanied the dawn of every pre-revolutionary period as those who want to make a revolution or at least change things got a hearing from layers of society that they would not have gotten in more stable times. He also noted that the old regimes had run out of steam both in ideas and personnel, as exemplified by those who ruled at the time of revolutionary upheaval.

While the spark that ignited each revolution had different causes the revolutionary process itself started out as a broad coalition of forces opposed, for various reasons, to the old regime. Then a process of differentiation occured where various more moderate or modest revolutionary types fell by the wayside or were pushed aside under pressure from the more plebian masses and those committed to see the revolution through to the end, the Cromwells, the Robsepierres and the Lenins. During the course of these changes the counter-revolution, usually aided by foreign powers, reared its head.

I want to give particular attention to the question of Thermidor- that is the point where the revolution itself loses steam. The term stems from that point in the French Revolution in 1794 where the extreme left under Robespierre was defeated by more moderate forces within his own party (the Jacobins) and while not returning back to the old regime most definitely marked the end of progressive social experimentation. This has always been a thorny question on the political left. The Bolsheviks, particularly Trotsky, in the period of decline of the Russian Revolution poured out reams of polemics on its meaning (and even its applicability to their revolution). There are various causes for Thermidor; the leadership cadre gets tired, complacent or dies defending the revolution against counter-revolution; the people who previously supported the more extreme measures act likewise; and, those who want to stop the revolution in its tracks find a voice for their frustrations.

That much is clear from Brinton. What may need some revising is the question of whether in light of the destruction of the Soviet Union in 1991-92 and the return to capitalism there and the reverses in the Chinese Revolution which place it on the road back to capitalism that the previous premise about not going back to the old regime still holds true. Great book

Very enlightening book, many deem paganism as evil but when studying the etymology of the word it just meant villager or farmer. And many of these farmers learned nature to cultivate their civilization neither was religion afforded to them because religion was for the rich folk. But even going further in history the teachings of the Kemetic faith provided a foundation for the main three religions. I love things like this, it makes you humble to know that what you believe in isn't original.

Misguided Origins

This book was informative in a quick no nonsense way. It highlights some of the material you would find in more elaborate books without getting into too many details. I went through it in one afternoon. I can't say I agree with all of it and some things I felt were coincidental at best. In reading any thing like this, you should do so with an open mind and be prepared to do some research so you can draw educated conclusions for yourself.

Everything you could want...

Y'know, I'm not usually big on books geared mainly at the prurient needs of us all, but this book has such a fun way of taking you down a preposterous journey of casual sexual encounters for money -- leading up to a massive, all night and all day and all night session with a number of men, all done in a world devoid of any real danger -- it's actually fun just to go along for the ride. The narrator -- I don't think he's ever named in the story -- is going to a tony college thanks to his grandfather, but he winds up making a baby with his girlfriend and needs some quick cash. What better way to do it than to line up with a gorgeous guy named Cameron and make himself available for sex with the gay boys at the school, for $40 a pop (pun intended)? Of course, the narrator's gorgeous, too, and gets to be in major demand and enjoys his encounters more than he expected, but it looks like Cameron's got ideas of his own -- as do a couple of guys known as Otis and Lamont. I gotta say -- this is one of those books that's like rollercoaster sex, all up and down and full of excitement. Everything you could want...if you're wanting a wild and crazy ride.

Fantastic Literary Pornography

This book was gay porn in print. The author really went there taking the visuals of extreme erotic encounters among men and writing them so well that you as the reader could see it. I was entertained to vast degrees following this narrator Travis, a sophmore in college who was in need of money to pay child support to his girl friend. Sitting in his dorm room with buddy Freddie, the two college guys were smoking weed and chatting about employement opportunities. Then Freddie mentions Cameron -a sexy jock guy, totally hot and totally hetero, that allows other guys to bareback and seed him for cash. In addition he performs oral and allows guys to finish in his mouth. Travis cannot believe what he is hearing and he is even more shocked to learn that Freddie had engaged in some oral activity for cash. Well now Travis is convinced and he goes on about his way, meeting with Cameron and learning the Ins and Outs of being a straight-boy prostitute for gay and bi-curious men.

Travis takes about 6-12 guys per night, and even engages in some serious orgy action. Through out the story he comes to discover that he actually has a craving for the lifestyle and becomes a complete and total hungry bottom.

At a frat party, things get out of control and he discovers more and more sexual fantasies that take him beyond the realm of what he is used too, shockingly he discovers he likes it and wants more. Travis becomes an intense and hot male-hooker and his appetite for being sodomized becomes so extreme that he shoves a dumb-bell up his rectum.

In the end the story takes a nice romantic turn and leaves you the ready with much to fantasize about with Cameron and Travis -still male hookers -but in love with one another.

The title says it all.

You have to love that title! There is really nothing more to the story than that. It's about a cash-strapped college kid who fancies himself hetero (even though it's obvious in the first few pages he's not), and turns to whoring to make ends meet. And meet they do! Over and over and over and over again. There is no plot to speak of, just a long, sometimes endless, series of random sexual escapades that culminates in the orgy to end all orgies. A never ending orgy that goes on and on and on until the author manages something I had hereto thought impossible: hot m/m action actually becomes mundane and even a little monotonous. The one thing I can say for the author, is that he knows his way around literary intercourse! The sex in FDB is explicit, steamy, and delectable. It's also repetitious.

About the Author
Rob Brooker (Ph.D., Yale University) received his B.A. in biology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. At Harvard, he studied lactose permease, the product of the lacY gene of the lac operon. He continues working on transporters at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and has an active research laboratory. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Brooker teaches undergraduate courses in biology, genetics, and cell biology. In addition to many other publications, he has written two undergraduate genetics texts published by McGraw-Hill: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 4th edition, copyright 2012, and Concepts of Genetics, copyright 2012.

Great book for introducing yourself to genetics

Best selling genetics textbook for a reason. This made genetics an easy A for me. It takes the scary out of what many consider a difficult (undergrad) biology course. He leaves a lot of holes (that only an advanced genetics student would notice) but this text is meant for intro type genetics courses (still 4xx/4xxx level) not advanced genetics or human genetics. If you like Brooker's Biology textbook you'll enjoy this. Not sure why one reviewer thought it was poorly written/organized. Are you sure you are referring to his 4th edition? First 3 editions maybe, but not this one.

Still accurate and just as good! Save money!

I find it hard to write reviews about text books. This one is no exception. The text is informative and accurate. The language and format is easy to understand, and the illustrations do a great job of, well, illustrating key points. I purchased it for a genetics course, and while a newer edition is available, I can say that this edition is still just as accurate. You can save yourself some money by purchasing this edition instead.
