Brilliant horror novel!

I always pride myself on being a fast reader but this one was extremely easy to whip through. I was lucky enough to get an ARC last month and have been dancing about wanting to post this review. Why? Because this story had me hooked, and everything else in my life had to take a back seat. There are only a handful of horror authors who can do that to me. Stephen King and Clive Barker come to mind. This ranks right up there with them.
This is a brilliant horror novel. Perfectly plotted from Sebastian’s gruesome demise to the calm, false sense of security while Ava tries to fit in at college. I especially appreciated the masterful way we don’t actually get to see the rape, just the aftermath of the crime. There's some pretty original scenes that I’d never seen in any other novel or movie: the turkey baster, emptying the bedpan over the salt covered skin. Intense! Although, for some reason, the one scene that made me cringe involved David in the parking garage van. The way the smell inside the vehicle was described really made my stomach lurch. Well done!

All Hail the Queen of Horror

[[VIDEOID:b1edcf2916da2c414fa5484d75850b7e]]It is very hard for me to type this review since I bit my fingernails to the nub while reading this fantastically titillating horror novel by Mylo Carbia. The Raping of Ava DeSantis is the first of Carbia's writings I have read, but it most certainly won't be the last.
This book was exactly what a dark, windy pre-fall Friday evening begged for. Ava is a college student doing what most college students do...trying to adapt and fit into a new environment. But after a terribly nasty rape, Ava's persona morphs into one that deadly, vengeful, and sinister. Never in my wildest imaginings would I have ever thought of using an umbrella or a turkey baster in the way it was used in this novel. And the salt bath...PRICELESS!!!! Being a serial killer never looked so good.
This is one of those books where you read the last page, only to turn right back to page one to read it all over again. Great writing, outstanding plot, and a heroine that is gruesomely brilliant. Carbia just earned herself a lifelong fan, so bow down, because the Queen of Horror has arrived!

Brutal and Unrelenting Horror!

"The Raping of Ava Desantis" contains some of the most horrifically terrifying scenes of any novel that I have read in quite a while. While the rape itself is not told of in detail, the aftermath of the act, and specifically the harm done to the body and psyche of young Ava will chill you to the bone. Ava was a freshman in college when she was invited to tutor the handsome son of a furniture magnate for twice the amount she was making as a waitress. Things go horribly wrong on the first night and Ava is brutally gang raped by three men. Wesley, the young man she was supposed to tutor comes from very old money, so Ava was coerced by her attacker's family and even her own father to accept a substantial amount of hush money to keep quiet. As time passes, Ava's rapists become successful and she was just a speed bump on their road to success.
But then, strangely enough, people start turning up dead and the past comes rushing back like an out of control freight train. Carbia flexes her literary muscle and delivers a story that is both compassionate to victims of sexual assault and truly terrifying at the same time. Its horror is unflinching and grips you so tightly that you keep turning the pages even though you know what's coming next will scare you witless.
Even with its dark themes, the novel is not without a sense of humor. I would add a 6th star if I could just for the line about a room looking like it was decorated by two straight men on a dare.
"The Raping..." is stark, blood freezing horror and any fan of a good scary read should snag this up as soon as possible.
